Preventing Ice Dams
Ice dams are caused by repeated freezing and thawing of snow resulting in a build up of ice in the gutters and edge of the roof, preventing newly melted snow to run down the deck to the eaves.
Heat from the home that is not properly vented & insulated escapes through the roof, melting the snow from beneath, causing it to flow down the roof to a point where the temperature is below freezing. The melted snow accumulates along the eaves and gutters, and re-freezes -“damming” the path of newly melted snow.
Ice dams can force water back up under the shingles and leak into the home causing hundreds or thousands of dollars of damage to ceilings and walls.
Once we’ve corrected the insulation & venting… ice dams are history.
